What is a GTIN – Global Trade Item Number?
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is a globally unique numerical code that enables easy and reliable identification of products in retail chains and online platforms around the world. The use of GTIN is key to tracking inventory, uniform labeling, and successful placement of products in retail systems.
Why is GTIN important for selling products?
✔ Unique identification: Each product and its variant (e.g. different sizes or packaging) has its own unique GTIN number.
✔ Standardization: GTIN ensures consistency and product recognition throughout the global supply chain.
✔ Merchant requirements: Most major retail chains and online marketplaces require products to be equipped with a GTIN number before accepting them into their offering.
GTINs and private labels
When developing your own cosmetic brand, it is important to remember that GTIN numbers are directly linked to the brand owner. Although Galex-lab provides you with comprehensive professional support in the development and preparation of products, obtaining GTIN numbers is solely within your competence as the brand owner.
Why don't we create GTINs?
- Brand Ownership: GTINs are linked to the legal and business information of the brand owner.
- Complete control: You decide how, where and when to assign GTINs to your products.
- Flexibility: As a product owner, you have complete control over inventory systems and sales channels.
How to obtain GTIN numbers for your products?
- Before applying for a GTIN, your company must be registered with all the necessary legal information.
- GTIN numbers are managed by the international organization GS1 , which is responsible for global product labeling standards. Contact your GS1 national office in Slovenia.
- After obtaining a business prefix from GS1, you can purchase unique GTIN numbers for your products.
- Assign each product variation (different quantities, scents, colors, etc.) its own unique GTIN number.
